  • Softball Coaching Fears - You Are Not Alone

softball coaching not alone Softball Coaching Fears You Are Not Alone

    Written by Stacie Mahoe

Most coaches have fears, worries, or anxiety about something. In fact, I'm not sure I know any coaches who don't.  It's pretty normal, when you really care about something greatly, to have concerns or worries about it.

However there is one softball coaching fear in particular that I see get in the way of good coaching time after time.

Can you guess what it is?

It's the fear of what others will think about you. I've heard advisers in other areas of life say that if you really want to be successful, you have to stop caring what other people think of you and your choices.

I believe that holds true for coaching softball too.

It's an easy trap to fall into. You and I both know how many critics there are of any softball coach. It comes with the territory. It's tough not to take things personally. Sure we all intellectually know that we shouldn't, but that's not always easy.  You're not the only coach who finds challenge in not allowing whispers (for shouts for that matter) from the outside impact what you do and the choices you make as a coach.

  • Softball Training - Pitching Kneeling on a Stability Ball

I've never met Monica Abbott's trainer but this dude gets 2 thumbs up from me for his creativity and forward-thinking.

As you can see on the video, he has Monica pitching while kneeling on a stability ball during her workouts. This type of softball conditioning forces her to learn how to use her core muscles to stabilize while pitching. This is very softball-specific (or pitching-specific) core training.

I definitely approve this and even strongly recommended to all young pitchers. However, kneeling on a ball isn't that easy. Here's the progression to follow before you get to actually pitch kneeling on the ball:

Step 1 - Learn how to kneel on the ball (that will take some time)
Step 2 - Learn how to remain balanced and in control while kneeling
Step 3 - Exchange a few chest passes with a simple basketball with a partner while kneeling on the ball
Step 4 - Mimic the softball pitching motion without actually throwing the ball and practice remaining stable
Step 5 - Model Monica and pitch from the ball with a real ball.

Be patient, all this may take you a few weeks to master.

  • Softball Training - Are You Feeling It?

In this podcast, Marc Dagenais explains the importance on focusing on what you "feel" when you work on refining your softball skills rather than "thinking" about what you need to do (i.e. bend the knees, bring arm at 90 degrees, etc.).

He discusses the idea of focusing on your physical feelings (i.e. what it feels like to do the right thing) rather than on being rationale when learning and refining skills and how this can shorten the learning curve by leaps and bounds because that's how the body was designed to learn movements.
