Purpose: Throwing accuracy and running speed all come into play in this game. Coaching softball requires teaching base running and accurate defensive plays.

Procedure: Prepare bases, gloves, and helmets. Make two teams with about seven kids on each. One team runs the bases. The other team places a person at each infield base. Include a pitcher and catcher. Extra fielders can back up, or rotate into the action after each throw. Play begins with the pitcher throwing the ball to the catcher who then throws to the first baseman. This person must tag the base with their foot before throwing to the second baseman, and so on, until the ball reaches home plate. Simultaneously, the first runner, who starts at first base, sprints around the bases in an effort to "beat" the ball home. If successful, a run is scored; otherwise, an out is called. After three outs, the teams change positions and the game continues. For safety purposes, fielders should throw "inside" or "outside" of the runner.

Purpose: To develop proper tagging-up techniques. This is for additional Softball Coaching Tips.

Procedure: This drill will be needing three bases, a softball, and gloves for the fielders. Set up three bases in the shape of a softball diamond. Place three fielders in the outfield positions. A coach stands in the infield between the pitcher's plate and second base. The rest of the team lines up at first base. The first player in line leads off first base a few feet. The coach throws a fly ball to one of the outfielders, before the outfielder catches the ball, the player runs back to first base, tags up, then hustles to second base. Although the outfielder attempts to catch every ball, she does not throw out any of the base runners as they tag up and run to the next base. The first player stays at second base. The next player in line at first base repeats the drill, but this time, both runners on base tag up. Now the bases are loaded for the third throw, and al! three runners tag up on it. Repeat the drill for every player. The coach rotates the throws to the different outfielders. After everyone has had a chance to run at least twice, the fielders come in and three new players head to the outfield.

Players must wait for the ball to be caught before running. Runners say, "Caught" out loud when the ball is caught as a reminder not to run too early. When tagging up, the runner should not run with the head up looking for the incoming throw. He should run with his head looking directly at the base he is advancing to. Teach players to slide into the bag they are advancing to after a tag up almost every time.

Purpose: To teach baserunners to cut tight corners and get around the bases as fast as possible. This drill works on the basics of base running.

Procedure: Set up an infield with no pitcher. Your baserunner tosses the ball to herself and hits a ground ball. She then takes off around the bases as fast as she can, going from first to second to third to home. The infield also circles the bases with their throws, trying to get the ball to home plate before the runner gets there. If it's an inexperienced team, it should be about even. More advanced teams have to take the ball back to first each time – that means, field it, go to first, go to second, back to first, go to third, back to first, and then home. The person who fields the ball is not allowed to be involved in covering a base, just as it is in a game. Every baserunner who makes it home before the ball gets a point. Make it a contest to see who can get the most points.

Purpose: To work on the basics of base running and improve the player's speed in running a single.

Procedure: Drill can have as many runners as desired in lines at first base and third base. The head coach is at home plate, and the assistant coach is at second base. On the head coach's signal, the runner at first base tries to reach second base before the runner at third base reaches home plate. The runners then jog to the ends of the opposite lines.

Purpose: To improve the player's overall conditioning and to work on the basics of base running in order to improve the player's explosive power and speed.

Procedure: Drill can have as many runners as desired in a line at home plate. The runner sprints to first base, jogs to the outfield fence along the right field sideline, and jogs back to first base (making a loop at first base in order to get in line with second base). As soon as the runner touches first base, the runner sprints to second base, jogs to the center field fence, and jogs back to second base (again making a loop at second base in order to get in line with third base). As soon as the runner touches second base, the runner sprints to third base, jogs to the outfield fence along the left field sideline, jogs back to third base, and sprints to home plate. The drill is repeated as many times as desired.

Procedure: The team is divided into two groups of eight players each. Each group is in a line with one player behind the other. The drill is conducted within the boundaries of the ball field. The first line of players starts to jog with equal distance between the players. Upon a signal given by the first person in line, the last player in line moves out of formation to the right and sprints to the front of the line. The runner then slows to a jog, and upon another signal, the last person in line sprints to the front of the line. This sequence continues for as long as desired. When there is enough room, the second line of players starts to jog.
