This drill is an excellent motivator for perfecting bunting skills. This drill will help coaches during games in coaching softball

PROCEDURE: Equipment needed are three cones, batting helmets, gloves, balls, bats. Set up three cones on the third-base line about 5 feet from home plate. Place one cone on the line and the others two feet and four feet at the fair territory beside the first cone. The coach will then pitch the ball. The batter squares to bunt, trying to bunt the ball between the two outside cones. Award one extra swing during regular batting practice if the batter bunts the ball between the two outside cones. The batter earns two extra swings for knocking down the middle cone. The coach can widen the cones depending on the age of the players or the team's skill, Positive reinforcement is importart in this drill.

VARIATION: Put an object such as a cone, extra glove, or bucket five to six feet from the foul line; the coach pitches to the hitter, who tries to drag bunt or slap hit the ball between the foul line and the object. Award five points if the player is successful, deduct five points if the ball reaches the mound. If the ball goes foul, no points are subtracted or added. This encourages the batter to bunt the ball either perfectly or foul.

Procedure: Equipments that are required are Helmets, balls, and bats including the "bunting bat" (wooden bat with a flat hitting surface).Explain how bunting wins games. Demonstrate the proper techniques of each phase. Remember that bunting is a hand-eye coordination skill similar to hitting (seeing the ball, hit the ball). Put the kids in lines in front of the instructor, Go through a simulated pitch movement, so batters know when to square around. Then use verbal commands (calling out the various hunts) since each skill calls for different body movements. Progress to bunting groups with a pitcher for each. Issue five bunts per discipline for each person. To end the activity, add in live pitching from the mound with one bunt per person. You can use the "Bunting Bat" for purposes of confidence.

Procedure: An old softball glove, an old bat, a bucket of hard balls. Put the barrel of an old bat through the opening in the back of an old glove. Attach the glove onto the bat four to six inches from the end of the bat so that the pocket of the glove is open wide. You can use rope, duct tape, or Velcro. The coach pitches the softball to the batter. The batter gets into the bunting position. When the ball reaches the batter, he pulls the bat back a few inches and catches the ball in the glove attached to the end of the bat. The coach continues pitching the softballs in the bucket.

This fun backyard softball bunting drill is an excellent way to teach what coaches call the "soft bunting technique”. Securing the glove at the end of the bat might prove some what difficult. This is a dual-purpose drill: The glove shows the player where the bat should hit the ball, and it reinforces the idea that bunting is not pushing the bat forward but letting the ball meet the bat. Catching the ball in the glove teaches this soft contact. The fat part of the bat should be held slightly higher than the handle of the bat.

Procedure: Line up some bats three feet in from each foul line, marking off the areas where you want the bunt to go. Then get in there and bunt.

Purpose: This drill works on the bunt by giving the hitter lots of bunting practice and works on defense by giving fielders practice in scooping up the bunt.

Procedure: Line up about five fielders, each with a ball. One player stands at home plate with the bat, and another player stands on first. The first fielder tosses the ball to the bunter, who then bunts it down either line. The tosser has to field her ball and throw it to first. She then gets her ball back and goes to the end of the line. At the same time, the next player already tossed her ball to the bunter, and so on and so on. Players should rotate through the tossing line two or three times, and then the next player becomes the bunter, and the former bunter joins the tossing line. You can set up a few "home plates" and "first bases" to have everyone doing this at once.

Purpose: To improve the player's bunt technique.

Procedure: A protective screen is in the middle of the pitching area. The drill has two pitchers and two catchers. Pitcher 1 will be in front of the protective screen and throws to home plate. Pitcher 2 is behind the protective screen and throws to second base. Each pitcher has a full bucket of balls, and each catcher has an empty ball bucket. The hitters are divided into two groups, with one group at home plate and the other group at second base. Hitter 1 bunts a specific bunt and runs to first base, while at the same time, hitter 2 bunts a specific bunt and runs to third base. Then both of the hitters jog to the ends of the opposite lines. For time efficiency, the balls that aren't contacted by the hitter are placed in the catcher's ball bucket, which allows the pitcher to prepare for the next pitch.
