Conditioning

Softball Fielding Drills – Five-Ball Drill

Purpose: To practice footwork and releasing the ball quickly for the throw. An intense conditioning element is also a part of this drill for softball fielding.

Procedure: This drill can be used with any of the infielders in a variety of situations. For each position, place five balls in a line in an area where that player would likely field balls. For example, to help the third baseman practice fielding bunts, set up five balls in a line extending from the foul line toward the pitcher's mound around 10 feet away from home plate, where the fielder would pick them up for a bunt. The third baseman begins in her normal position and depth, then runs to surround the first ball and throws it to first. She then runs back to her starting position and quickly turns back to field the next ball. Repeat until the fielder has thrown all five balls. Place the balls in simular areas for the first baseman and catcher. For middle infielders, place the balls to one side of each player and have them practice their throws to each of the bases. Each player fields and throws two sets of five balls placed in slightly different locations.

Softball Baserunning Drills – Sprint Baserunning Drill

Purpose: To improve the player's overall conditioning and to work on the basics of base running in order to improve the player's explosive power and speed.

Procedure: Drill can have as many runners as desired in a line at home plate. The runner sprints to first base, jogs to the outfield fence along the right field sideline, and jogs back to first base (making a loop at first base in order to get in line with second base). As soon as the runner touches first base, the runner sprints to second base, jogs to the center field fence, and jogs back to second base (again making a loop at second base in order to get in line with third base). As soon as the runner touches second base, the runner sprints to third base, jogs to the outfield fence along the left field sideline, jogs back to third base, and sprints to home plate. The drill is repeated as many times as desired.

Free Softball Drills – Indian Relay

Purpose: To improve the player's speed and work on the basics of base running.

Procedure: The team is divided into two groups of eight players each. Each group is in a line with one player behind the other. The drill is conducted within the boundaries of the ball field. The first line of players starts to jog with equal distance between the players. Upon a signal given by the first person in line, the last player in line moves out of formation to the right and sprints to the front of the line. The runner then slows to a jog, and upon another signal, the last person in line sprints to the front of the line. This sequence continues for as long as desired. When there is enough room, the second line of players starts to jog.

Softball Drills – Figure 8

Purpose: One of the best softball fielding drills used to improve quickness and glove handling. The Figure 8 also provides a good conditioning element as well.

Procedure: A fielder stands between two cones that are around 20 feet apart. A tosser sets up with 10 balls around 20 feet from the fielder but directly in front of her. The fielder starts by running toward a cone while the tosser throws a soft line drive toward the cone. The fielder runs and reaches to catch it. Once it is caught the fielder throws the ball out of the way and heads toward the other cone. The tosser then throws a soft line drive toward that cone. The fielder again catches it and gets rid of it quickly. The fielder continues running around the cones and switches directions in a figure 8 pattern. Each player catches two sets of 10 balls.

Free Softball Drills – Balls to Spots

Purpose: To teach the outfield defense to run to a spot and then find the ball. This skill is used for balls that the player quickly knows are over her head but that she can still catch. This drill includes a good conditioning part as well.

Procedure: Outfielders form a line at one of the starting positions like everyone lines up in left field. One outfielder is up at a time, and a coach is in front of the fielder. Before tossing the ball the coach picks a spot to the left or right of the player, around 30 feet behind her, and shows the spot to the player. This spot should be within the range of a sprinting outfielder. When the coach tosses the ball to the designated spot the player puts her head down (taking her eyes off the ball and sprints to the spot she thinks the ball will be.) Next, she turns to find the ball and catches it. Toss 8-10 balls to a spot to the left of each outfielder and then repeat to the right.

Outfield Drills for Softball – Ten-Ball Drill

Purpose: To make the outfield defense improve concentration and practice higher repetitions in fielding fly balls. The drill supplies a strong conditioning element as well.

Procedure: One outfielder is up at a time in any space that is free, only need one field. A coach or player hitting or tossing balls faces the outfielder and the hitter has a minimum of 10 balls ready. Another player will help to hand the fungoer the balls; the other outfielders wait for their turns and can be used in this role. Hit fly balls to a fielder in succession, giving the fielder just enough time to catch the ball and toss it out of the way immediately before fielding the next hit ball. Hit a combination of short, easy fly balls and long fly balls to both sides of the fielder. Hit the fielder 10 balls in a row then switch players. Do two sets of 10 for each outfielder.

Softball Drills – Baserunning Conditioning Drill

Purpose: Drill for softball conditioning which has the players run the bases in game-like situations.

Procedure: Sprint from home through first base, as if you just hit a ground ball in the infield. Take a lead at first and execute a delay steal of second. Take a one-out lead from second and score on a base hit. From home plate, make a turn at first base, pretending you got a base hit to the outfield. Follow that by simulating a hit-and-run, taking your normal lead at first base and ending up at third. Tag up on a fly ball to the left field and sprint home. Execute back-to-back doubles and two scores from second base. Finally, end with an inside-the-park home run.

Softball Throwing Drills – Controlled Fungo

Purpose: To create gamelike defensive situation and to work on the softball throwing mechanics. This drill also provides baserunning practice and conditioning for runners.

Procedure: Place the defensive players, including the catcher, in their positions (a pitcher is optional). Extra players should run with helmets on. Next, create defensive situations by placing runners at a certain base to begin the inning. The coach fungos from home plate, and the runners and defense play it out like they would in a game. Play the innings out or just keep repeating a certain situation until it is mastered. Perform this drill for 20-30 minutes.
