It's important to start with a player's softball hitting technique at a young age

Procedure: You will need Tees, bats, balls, helmets, bases, cones, and bicycle tires or hula hoops. Devise two teams. The batter hits off of the tee placed on home plate- If they miss the ball, or if they knock the tee over, it's a strike. Three strikes and you're out. They are also out if they fling the bat after contact. To prevent this, instruct the kids to place the bat on the bicycle tire or hula hoop just behind the plate. After a fair ball, He/she runs to first base.

You can also incorporate fielding and throwing exercises into this game. Place the tires or hoops (one for each fielder) adjacent to the defensive team (horizontal or zigzag). After retrieving the ball, players must runover and get into their tire or hoop. The ball must then be thrown and caught (overhand or underhand) in succession. While this is going on, the offensive team runs around a pair of cones. This scoring system stops once each fielder has caught the ball The instructor should yell "stop" to stop the action.

A pitch may be delivered as soon as all offensive players (except pitcher and hitter) are behind the "dugout line" (use equipment bags), regardless of the defensive team's readiness. A pitcher may stop any ball hit by the batter (same team) before it reaches the "infield zone" (ruled a foul ball). All offensive players hit in successive order regardless of playing infield, outfield, or sitting out. Reserves should take turns alternating into play each inning. The home plate umpire calls outs, foul balls, zone infraction, home runs, and base hits. Offensive teams have three outs per inning. Each batter may receive up to two pitches and a At-bat before being called out. Outs (adiust to skill level) include any swing and

Base hits include any fair ball dropping to the ground beyond the "pitcher's zone"; stopping within a fair "defensive zone" without being touched by the defense, or which is miss-played; or passing through the "infield zone." There are no doubles or triples. Home runs are any balls hit over an outfielder's head (umpire's discretion). No half-inning can last longer than five minutes or have more than five runs scored. No inning can start five minutes before the end of the "Rock Ball" time period (umpires call). Both teams must receive equal offensive and defensive innings. All runs must be forced in.

Many hitters have no idea about the details of the pitch even if they hit it. Pitch recognition is extremely helpful to those players who have the tendency to chase balls that are out of the strike zone. It doesn't matter which word is stated first. If you feel that location is a greater concern for your team, have your players yell out location first.

Procedure: This drill will need four bases, a bucket of softballs, a fence or some cones. Place three bases (or four depending on the age of the participants) five to eight feet apart from one another in a straight line toward second base. Each base represents home plate. Older players use the base farthest from second as home plate, while younger hitters stand at the base closest to second. Players scatter around the field to field the balls. The coach pitches a predetermined number of balls for shallow center field. If a player hits the ball over the fence, it is a home. The batter gets an extra swing for every home run. If there is no fence, set up a boundary with cones.

Purpose: To end practice on a high note and have fun during softball hitting drills.

This is the only drill where players are encouraged to hit home runs. Coaches should not be concerned with me quality of a player's swing. This drill is primarily a fun exercise to break up or finish a practice. Point out good fielding plays during this drill. Positive reinforcement is important because it emphasizes that, even in fun drills, mastering the fundamentals is the key to a successful softball team. If very few home runs are being hit, move the bases closer to the outfield grass.

Procedure: Two batting tees are required. Place the first tee slightly in front of home plate by 2 to 4 inches. Line it up with the middle of the plate. The second tee should be placed at least two feet in front of the first tee in a direct line at the same height. Place a ball on both tees. You will assume a ready position. Your partner will provide the verbal hitting commands — stride and pivot. Attempt to hit the ball off the first tee so that it makes contact with the ball on the second tee. The ball on the front tee serves as a target.

As your hitters become more successful, move the front tee further ahead. You may want to set up competitions to determine who can hit the most targets. For advanced hitters, leave the front tee in the original position and have the partner give soft tosses. The hitter will try to hit the feed and knock the ball off the front tee.

Procedure: This drill will require two single batting tees, bucket of softballs. A batting cage or a soft toss hitting area. Tee is positioned on the front outside comer of the plate while the second tee is placed on the inside comer, approximately six to eight inches in front of the first tee. A ball is put on each tee. The batter assumes his stance and loads. The coach, or hitting partner, calls out "inside" or "outside" when the batter loads to swing. The batter should then hit the ball off the tee that corresponds to the coach's command.

Because many pitchers pitch away (i.e., to the outside), most of the repetitions should involve hitting the ball off the outside tee. A ball should be placed on each tee for each repetition.

Play as if there were:

a. Two outs.

b. Use a bases-loaded situation where hitters and runners move up a base after a fair ball swing, This utilizes more players into the activity.

c. Place a runner at third base with less than two outs.

The batter must knock the run in either by base hit, sacrifice fly, ground ball (contact play), or squeeze bunt.
