Hitting

Softball Hitting Drills – Long Tee Drill

Purpose: To learn how to drive through the ball, for softball hitting, and consistently hit line drives. By hitting off the tee three to four feet from the net you don't always get a clear picture of how to hit the ball. With this drill, players learn how to consistently hit line drives.

Procedure: Set a ball on a tee about 30 feet in front of the net. Place a home plate behind the tee so you can adjust your stance in relation to the plate. Hit line drives into the back of the net.

Softball Practice Drills – Tri-Station Drill

Purpose: To maximize the number of reps on offense for each player.

Procedure: Set up three stations: live hitting, bunting down the right field line, and cage work. Limit the groups to four or five players in every station, allowing each hitter four or five minutes. Players work in one station for 20 minutes and then jog over to the next station to avoid wasting time.

Fast Pitch Softball Hitting Drills – Opposite – Field Hitting

Purpose: To learn to wait on the ball and hit the outside pitch to the opposite field when softball hitting.

Procedure: Set up the L-shaped screen on the right side of the pitching mound as viewed from the right-handed hitter, and on the left side for a left-handed hitter. Players break up into two groups which are left-handed and right-handed hitters. Shaggers take all positions on the field. The hitter looks for a pitch away and hits the ball back in the direction it came from.

Softball Hitting Drills – Bounce Drill

Purpose: To develop weight shift, hand-eye coordination, and timing for softball hitting.

Procedure: Set up in front of a net with a feeder kneeling about 10 feet away, just off your front knee. The feeder triggers your cocking action by bouncing the ball off the cement block or ground at a 45 degree angle so it bounces up for a strike in front of the plate. If the ball bounces inside, turn on the ball and drive it to the left of the net, simulating a hit to left field (for a right-handed hitter) and if the ball bounces in the middle, hit it back up the middle and finally if the ball bounces to the outside, drive the ball to the right of the net, simulating a hit to right field (for a right-handed hitter).

Softball Hitting Drills – Hip-Rotation Drill

Purpose: This softball hitting drill is meant to develop proper hip rotation and learn how to remain balanced at the point of contact, skills necessary to pull the softball.

Procedure: Set up in front of a net or at the plate with a feeder kneeling in front of you, just off your front hip. The feeder flips the ball toward your front hip so that you can pivot and drive the ball into the net to the left (for a right-handed hitter). Use a batting tee if you don't have someone to feed you pitches. The feeder should alternate high and low tosses to help you learn how to adjust your hands to different pitches.
