Softball Fielding Drills – Two Bucket Drill

Equipment Needed: Bat, balls, buckets, gloves

Purpose: Great defensive drill for fielding repetitions, also provides good conditioning and a chance for coaches to asses skills.

Explanation: This drill has lots of fielding, throwing, & conditioning. You can have the players fielding to their left or right or straight on. This is also a good way for coaches to look at fielders and coach their skills, great for tryouts (and gives the coaches a workout).

This is a team fielding drill using two coaches to hit balls to the players.

Start by dividing the team into four groups of equal number. Groups do not have to be equal in skill. Put one group at shortstop position and lined up away from home plate (on the outfield side of the baseline). One group is at second base position and lined up away from the plate (outfield side of the base line). Each of the other two groups serve as catchers for each of the coaches, and each coach is up the foul line on each side of home plate. Each coach also has a bucket of softballs. Coach on first base side of home plate hits to fielders at SS position. Coach on third base side hits to second base fielders.

The first player at SS fields the ball and throws to the first catcher in line on the first base side and then rotates to her left to the second base fielders’ group.

The first player at 2B fields the ball and throws to the first catcher in line on the third base side and rotates (to her left) to the catcher group on the first base side.

The first catcher on the first base side receives the throw from the SS position, tosses the ball to her coach or puts it in the bucket. She then rotates (to her left) to the end of the catchers line on the third base coach’s side.

The first catcher on the third base side receives the throw from second tosses to her coach or puts it in the bucket. She then rotates (left) to the back of the line at SS.

All players are rotating clockwise.

Safety precaution: There are lots of balls in play so everyone must be HEADS-UP! Coaches need to exercise caution and good judgment (don’t put too many balls in play). All players have to hustle to next position. I recommend you have at least 16 to 20 players minimum. We spend about 15 to 20 minutes to complete this drill.
