Purpose: To learn to adjust to the contact spot for three pitches - inside, middle, and outside when softball hitting.

Procedure: The tosser is in a kneeling position and tosses balls to the three spots where the batter should make contact. The tosser calls the number of the spot where she will toss the ball as she tosses it ("One" for inside, "Two" for middle, "Three" for outside). The hitter makes contact at that location, saying "Hit" on contact.

Purpose: To learn how to throw a softball when it's wet to prepare for soggy conditions.

Procedure: Players practice throwing with a wet ball so that they can adjust to the elements and prepare psychologically for any conditions. Many types of drills can be executed with a wet ball. Outfielders must often adjust to wet grass, so include numerous outfield ground-ball drills.

Purpose: To practice getting under the ball for rise-ball release. Drill for softball pitching that also develops body and arm strength.

Procedure: The pitcher pitches to a catcher from second base or farther, lobbing the ball up as if she is throwing it over a telephone pole. This action forces the pitcher to get under the ball. To develop strength, the pitcher keeps backing up (from second base, to center field, to the fence) to see how far she can throw it.

Purpose: To practice sacrifice bunts and bunt placement which teaches players how to bunt a softball in these critical situations. (...)

Purpose: To practice sacrifice bunts and bunt placement which teaches players how to bunt a softball in these critical situations.

Procedure: A rope is placed 15 feet from home plate and in a semicircle stretching from one sideline to the other. The pitcher and catcher are at their defensive positions with the base runners on the base paths. The pitcher has a full ball bucket, and the catcher has an empty ball bucket. All the hitters are at home plate. Each hitter bunts the ball and tries to keep it inside the rope. The hitter gets two chances to contact the bunt. If the first or second ball is bunted, the hitter runs to first base. If the hitter misses both balls, she runs all the bases before returning to the end of the line.

Purpose: A drill for the fastpitch softball defense which improves outfield decision making about whether to go for the lead runner or the batter.

Procedure: Use a full defense minus the pitcher with runners at home and first going on the hit. A runner at home starts on the right side of the plate out of the hitter's way and goes on contact to make the play realistic. She runs to first and joins the line there. The hitter hits various types of balls to the outfield. The fielder must decide whether to go for the lead runner or throw behind her and stop the second runner. Move runners to different starting positions and vary the types of balls played.

Purpose: To practice picking up the coach's signal when running from first to third, which makes this drill great for softball coaching.

Procedure: The drill uses a right fielder, second baseman (for relay), and catcher. Runners line up behind first. The coach fungo hits to the right fielder. The runner assumes a three-step leadoff before the hit. On the hit, the runner approaches second and looks to the third-base coach for the signal to stop or continue to third. If stopped, the runner makes an aggressive turn and finds the ball. She returns to the end of the line, and the next runner goes.

Purpose: A drill for fastpitch softball defense that lets them practice reaching and running through every ball.

Purpose: A drill for fastpitch softball defense that lets them practice reaching and running through every ball.

Procedure: Fielders form a line about 10 feet from the tosser. One at a time they run laterally as the tosser tosses the ball low and in front of them so that they have to reach. Each player focuses on exploding through the ball as she catches it. The fielder must not stop and reach because doing so would limit her range. Each player returns the ball with a toss, waits, and forms a line that reverses the direction.
