Free Girls Softball Drills - Fly-Ball Communication

 Equipment Needed: Balls, gloves, bat

Purpose: Defensive communication and softball conditioning. Failure to communicate in softball is a big problem. Here's a drill

Explanation: We divide the team into two separate teams. Team A has one baserunner at first who runs from first base to second and back as many times as possible before the defense can get her out. The defense puts four or five athletes on the field. The coach hits a fly ball between the defenders. They must communicate to make the catch. If the catch is made, the runner is out and the next runner is up. If the ball gets down, the defense must communicate in order to relay a ball to a base to tag the runner.

Each 60-foot path achieved by a runner counts for one point. After each runner has an attempt, the teams switch. We generally play three innings, and as the hitter, the coach can make the play begin as he or she wants.
