Free Softball Drills – Getting a Jump

Purpose: To learn how to read a pitcher's move and get a good jump which works on the basics of base running.

Procedure: Players align in three lines of four and get into a stealing lead. From the mound, the coach tells the players to watch for a particular move; the pitcher follows by demonstrating that move. The pitcher gets into a stretch position. The players yell "back" or "ho" after they take the crossover step toward second. Focus on the pitcher's movement and then break toward second in a straight line.
