Fun Softball Drills – Advancing From First to Third

Purpose: This drill focuses on the basics of base running and makes players learn when to advance from first to third on a hit.

Procedure: Line up several players wearing batting helmets at first base and home plate. Position a full team in the field, or use just outfielders and a catcher. Make sure arms are loose. A coach is at home plate with a fungo bat and plenty of softballs. As the coach grounds the ball into the outfield, the runner on first heads to second base and the player at home heads to first base. They read the outfielder to determine whether they can advance an extra base.
