Fun Softball Drills for Softball Defense – Movement

Equipment needed: Two buckets of balls and one empty bucket, dirt infield and bases in place.

Purpose: Throw to a moving target.

Explanation: Place the two buckets of balls at home plate and the empty bucket at third base. Split the team in half; half of the players at the pitcher’s mound and half in the three/four hole. A coach rolls a ball from home plate to the players lined up at the mound, they field and throw to the players moving to first and proceed to line up behind the last player in the three/four hole. The players moving toward first can’t move until the ball is fielded. After catching the ball at first base, they run toward home plate and place the ball in the bucket and run to get in line at the pitcher’s mound. The coach keeps the groups moving by rolling the next ball after the ball has left the fielder’s hand. After two rounds at the pitcher’s mound the fielders will move to shallow shortstop and again throw to first base for two rounds. They then will continue the drill at third base throwing to moving players at second base. After the ball is caught, they will run toward third and place the ball in the bucket at third. After two rounds the drill is complete. Please note that at each base the receiver of the ball is yelling “ball….ball….ball”.
