Softball Batting Drills – Hitting Drop Drill

Purpose: To improve the batter's hand quickness when softball hitting.

Procedure: Using a regulation bat or a stick cut to the length of a bat, the player takes a hitting stance. The feeder stands a safe distance from the hitter, but close enough to be able to drop a whiffle golf ball into one of the three hitting zones. The feeder should be able to drop a ball that simulates either an inside pitch, an outside pitch, or a pitch down the middle. To drop the whiffle golf ball into the batter's inside hitting zone, the feeder should drop the ball in front of the hitter at a point on the inside corner of the plate. To drop the whiffle golf ball into the outside hitting zone, the feeder should drop the ball in front of the hitter to the batter's outside corner of the plate. To drop the whiffle golf ball into the middle of the batter's hitting zone, the feeder should drop the ball in front of the hitter at a point in the middle of the plate.

Softball Pitching Drills – The Fielding Pitcher

Purpose: To work on your reaction time for softball pitching.

Procedure: This is a two-ball drill that includes your catcher and another person, a thrower, who stands next to the catcher. As you pitch, this thrower tosses a ball out to you before your pitch even gets to the catcher. You have to field this ball, which then becomes the next ball you pitch. The catcher hands the one you have pitched to the thrower.

Softball Baserunning Drills – Line Jogging

Purpose: To improve the player's speed and work on the basics of base running.

Procedure: The team's divided into two groups. Each group forms a line with one player behind the other. The drill is conducted within the boundaries of the softball field. The first line of players starts to jog with equal distance between the players. When a signal is given by the first person in line, the last player in line moves out of formation to the right and sprints to the front of the line. The sequence continues for as long as desired. When there's enough room, the second line of players starts to jog.

Outfield Drills for Softball – Face Drill

Purpose: To improve the outfielder's technique of opening her body to catch a fly ball hit to each of the three basic softball fielding spots – to her right; to her left; and over her head.

Procedure: The coach stands around twenty feet away as the outfielder takes a ready position. A proper ready position for a right-handed outfielder is a position in which the outfielder stagger her left foot slightly ahead of her right foot. The coach throws the ball to one of the three spots. The coach should either throw the ball as a line drive or a fly ball. When fielding a fly ball, an outfielder's first step should be in the direction in which the ball is heading. When fielding a line drive, the outfielder should use a cross-over technique as her initial step.
