Softball Catcher Drills – Wild Pitch Drill

Purpose: To improve the softball catchers technique in responding to a wild pitch that goes to the backstop.

Procedure: Wearing her equipment, the catcher takes her proper stance behind home plate. The coach stands on the grass in front of home plate and throws a ball past the catcher toward the backstop. The catcher should turn to the side of the wild pitch and sprint to the ball. To field the ball, the catcher should round the point at where the ball will stop. As the catcher closes to the ball, she should slide to the ground on her left knee and extend her right leg. She should use her "whol hand" to grasp the ball from the turf and pop up from her left knee to a throwing position. A proper throwing position for the right-handed catcher is a position in which her left shoulder is pointed at the target.
