Softball Drills – Reads in the Outfield

Purpose: To teach runners on first base to read the balls that are in the gap or over the outfielders' heads, a drill focusing on the basics of base running.

Procedure: Line up runner at first base wearing batting helmets. Position players in all positions and position a coach just in front of the mound in a grassy area. The first runners takes her primary lead off first base, and, as the coach throws the ball up to hit, moves out to her secondary lead. The runner reacts to the hit and advances as far as she can.
