Softball Hitting Drills - Individual Toss

Purpose: The individual toss drill, for softball hitting, is a great excercise for enhancing hand-eye coordination, and it enables the entire team to work on their swings at the same time.

Procedure: Give each player a bat and five balls, and space the players along the third-base line with at least 10 feet between each hitter. Have them face the outfield. Each player should start by holding a ball in her left hand and a bat in the other while maintaining the proper hitting position. This allows a right-handed hitter to toss the ball out in front more easily so she can take a full swing.

On your command, the players toss the ball into the air to themselves, get their free hands back on the bats, and swing and hit the balls. When the players hit all their balls, have them sprint to the outfield to gather their shares. When all the players return to the third-base line,  the drill can be repeated.

Each player should take as many balls as they can so they spend less time going back and forth to retrieve them. If there's not enough bats to go around for everyone, pair up the players and make the partner responsible for chasing down the batted balls to keep the drill moving along.
