Softball Pitching Drills – Plate Coverage on a Wild Pitch

Purpose: To teach pitchers proper technique for plays at the plate on passed balls which is really important for the softball pitching position. The drill also works on wild pitches and is when a runner is on third.

Procedure: Line pitchers up on the mound. Catchers may be used in this drill so they can practice throwing balls back to the plate, but it's not necessary. If you're using a catcher, place her in a catching stance at home plate. The coach then throws a ball to the backstop for the catcher to throw back to the plate. If no catcher is involved the coach stands at the backstop and throws balls back to the plate. The pitcher runs to the plate, positions herself on the back side of the plate if possible and up the line 1-2 feet, where she waits in a semicrouched position for the ball to be thrown. The pitcher gets the ball and tags the incoming ghost runners in front of the plate. Each pitcher catches 5-10 throws.
