Softball Practice Drills – Footwork on a Tag Play

Purpose: To have the infield develop proper technique for a tag play at a base. The footwork on a tag play is the same for any base.

Procedure: Players can be up one at a time at one base or at each of their respective bases with more than one thrower. The coach or partner stands near the pitching mound. The coach or partner throws the ball at knee height (like in any tag play) to the bag. The fielder should position herself in front of the bag (facing the incoming runner), taking half of the bag away from the offensive player. After the player gets the ball, she tags the imaginary runner (the back side of the glove is down with the fingers pointing up) and moves toward the infield quickly. Each fielder takes 10-15 throws.
