Softball Practice Drills – Forehand Flips

Purpose: To teach the flip used as a throw by the infield when players are within close range of the target from the forehand side. Using this technique can cut down on overthrows. The forehand flip is mostly used by the shortstop when shoveling the ball to second base when within short range of second but not close enough to take the bag herself (farther than 5 feet away), and by the second baseman when shoveling the ball to first after fielding the ball in the gap.

Procedure: Start by placing infielders in a line at the shortstop position with a receiver at second base. Hit or roll the bal to each player. The player fields the ball then turns her body so her feet are pointing toward second base and her shoulders are square to the target. She then shovels the ball to second base aiming chest high over the base. Hit 10-15 balls to each player or continue until the skill is mastered.
