Softball Practice Drills – Reads at Second

Purpose: This drill works on the basics of base running by having players learn how to tag up at second.

Procedure: Place several runners at second base and run them two at a time. A coach is at hom plate with a fungo bat and the outfielders are in position. The coach hits fungoes, line drives, and pop-ups to the outfield and the runners react accordingly, either holding or advancing to the next base.
