Softball Sliding Drills – Multi-Sliding Drill

Purpose: To improve the different softball sliding techniques.

Procedure: Four or more runners are at each base and the head coach is in the pitching area. The first runner in each line will run toward the next base and do a specific slide. An example would be, the runner going into second base does a bent-leg or pop-up slide, the runner going into third base does a head-first slide, and the runner going into home does a hook slide. After the runner slides at home plate, the runner jogs to first base, and the drill is repeated for as long as desired.

Softball Practice Drills – Bunting Technique

Purpose: To improve the player's bunt technique.

Procedure: A protective screen is in the middle of the pitching area. The drill has two pitchers and two catchers. Pitcher 1 will be in front of the protective screen and throws to home plate. Pitcher 2 is behind the protective screen and throws to second base. Each pitcher has a full bucket of balls, and each catcher has an empty ball bucket. The hitters are divided into two groups, with one group at home plate and the other group at second base. Hitter 1 bunts a specific bunt and runs to first base, while at the same time, hitter 2 bunts a specific bunt and runs to third base. Then both of the hitters jog to the ends of the opposite lines. For time efficiency, the balls that aren't contacted by the hitter are placed in the catcher's ball bucket, which allows the pitcher to prepare for the next pitch.

Softball Catcher Drills – Quick Release Drill

Purpose: To improve quickness in taking the ball out of the glove, to improve footwork and to practice quickly releasing a throw for softball catchers.

Procedure: The catchers, who are 60-70 feet apart, throw to each other playing "hard catch." They work on taking the ball out of the glove quickly and on using the proper footwork while emphasizing quick release on the throws.

Free Softball Drills – Runner on Second

Purpose: To learn how to advance a runner to third base when softball hitting.

Procedure: First, second, and third baseman are in place and a runner is on second. The outfielders are behind the cage at home, with one hitter hitting while the others wait in line. Hitters and runners should wear helmets. A coach is on the mound behind an L-shaped screen, either throwing or feeding the pitching machine. The hitter hits the ball to the right side of the diamond to move the runner to third base. Mix in a few drag or push bunts to advance the runner.

Free Softball Drills – Diamond Drill

Purpose: To help fielders improve lateral movement. This drill provides a good softball conditioning element as well.

Procedure: Players set up with a partner and stand facing each other approximately 6-10 feet apart. One player has a ball, and her partner begins in her infield ready position (outfielders can use a middle infield ready position). The partner rolls the ball to the fielder's side, and the fielder responds by shuffling her feet to move to field the ball (as opposed to making a crossover step). After fielding the ball with both hands the fielder immediately tosses the ball in the air back to her partner, and the partner then rolls the ball to the fielder's other side. Perform this for two or three sets of 10 or 15 tosses.

Softball Practice Drills – Crossover Drill

Purpose: This drill works on the basics of base running by having players learn how to cross over and pivot on the right foot.

Procedure: The players pair up. One player (stealer) is in a stealing position and the other (partner) stands in front of her, just off her right foot. The partner holds a batting glove in front of herself, about waist high. The stealer reaches with her left arm to grab the glove and then crosses over. As she she grabs the glove, she crosses over with her left foot and pulls her left arm back in sync. The grab-and-crossover action puts the arms and legs in sync on the first step, developing the quickness needed to steal a base.

Free Softball Practice Drills – Bunting Technique

Purpose: To develop the technique and bat control used for safety and sacrifice bunts.

Procedure: Mark off two lines five to ten feet away from home plate. Cones or balls can also be used to mark off a certain area. Then set up a pitcher and catcher, and one player on each of the base lines to retrieve bunted balls. Get in the bunting stance before the pitcher releases the ball. Work on the techniques of the sacrifice bunt, trying to bunt the ball into the designated areas. Have each player bunt the ball to both sides several times.

Free Softball Drills – Pop-Ups – Infielders

Purpose: A drills that teaches the basics of how to catch a softball by establishing the right guidelines for fielders when pop-ups are hit in the infield.

Procedure: Place players in their infield positions and hit pop-ups in all areas. The key is to communicate – someone must call the ball each time. Players should only call the ball by saying, "Mine, mine!" Once a player calls for the ball she must catch it, unless there is time for another player to call her off. If a player wants the ball that was already called, she must say, "No, no, mine, mine!". Hit 2-3 pop-ups per position.

Youth Softball Drills – Tag Plays at the Plate

Purpose: Drill for softball catchers where they will develop the proper set-up position to receive the ball and take a collision with the runner attempting to score.

Procedure: The catcher sets up 1-2 feet up the third base foul line. The catcher's feet must be facing the direction from which the ball is being thrown. The left foot is close to the third base foul line, taking away most of the plate. The coach throws balls to the plate on one bounce from the mound or a little deeper. As the catcher receives the ball, she begins to square her body toward third base with her feet facing third. Her knees must be bent. In a game situation, if the runner slides, the catcher simultaneously receives the ball and begins to go down on both knees to tag the runner with two hands to prevent the ball from being knocked out. If the runner tries to avoid the tag by sliding to the back of the plate, the catcher must take her hands to the plate for the tag. She doesn't try to chase the runner – the runner must come to the plate to be safe. Each catcher takes 5-10 throws.

Free Softball Practice Drills – Tag Up Drill: First and Third

Purpose:To learn how to tag up at first and third and advance in a game situation, focusing on the basics of base running.

Procedure: Runners are on first and third and fielders are in position in the outfield and infield. A coach at home plate hits fly balls to the outfield and runners take leads and react to the ball hit by the coach. Runners read the catch and then break for the next base as the outfielder makes the proper throw. The pitcher then backs up at home plate.
