Softball Fastpitch Hitting Drills – Back-Hand Wiffle Toss

Purpose: A drill for softball hitting which emphasizes the pivot and keeping the hands and back elbows close to the body.

Procedure: The tosser stands at a 45-degree angle in front of the hitter. She tosses Wiffles to the hitter's midsection. The hitter does not have a bat. From the stride position the hitter pivots and catches (or hits) the ball with the back hand at a spot opposite the belly button.

Indoor Softball Drills – Figure Eight

Purpose: This softball hitting drill allows players to develop a quick adjustment to the ball.

Procedure: The batter is in her stance, and a tosser is down on one knee with a ball in each hand. The tosser is six feet away facing the batter. The tosser tumbles both balls around each other and then tosses one or the other to the batter. The batter then takes a full swing and hits the ball into the net. The batter does not know which ball will be released.

Softball Batting Drills – Wall Swings

Purpose: A drill for softball hitting which teaches players how to avoid casting the barrel in a long, sweeping swing.

Procedure: The batter stands facing the wall, about a bat's length away. She assumes her batting stance and swings. The bat should not touch the wall if the hands are going to the ball. If the batter has a long, sweeping swing, the bat will hit the wall.

Free Fastpitch Softball Drills – Long T Hitting

Purpose: A softball hitting drill that allows players to see the outcome of their hits.

Procedure: Set up a T at least 30 feet from the net so that batters can see where the ball goes – ground ball, fly ball, pulled ball, and so forth. When a batter is close to the net, every hit looks good. The T can also be set up at home plate so that players can see the results and work on the contact spot for opposite-field hitting.

Free Fastpitch Softball Drills – Reverse Tracking

Purpose: To practice tracking the ball and keeping the hands inside the barrel, which is very important when it comes to hitting a softball.

Procedure: The ball is flipped from behind the hitter on an inside-out plane. The hitter can slightly turn her head to track the toss. As the ball comes forward the hitter must hold her power angle until contact. The hitter must wait on the ball and then drive it with authority into the center of the net. The hitter needs to fully extend before rolling her wrists.

Free Girls Softball Practice Drills – Target Hitting

Purpose: This drill is for softball hitting. It's main purpose is to develop the right-handed batter's skill of hitting an outside pitch to right field and an inside pitch to left field, and vice versa for the left-handed batter.

Procedure: In batting practice the batter must hit into an assigned area of the field. For example, the first pitch a right-handed batter hits must be to the right field. She will need to be sure to wait for an outside pitch. On her next swing she must try to pull the ball, thus looking for an inside pitch. This drill can be done with or without fielders and base runners.

Youth Softball Drills – Hitting Drill

This drill for softball hitting requires the coach to divide the team into groups of five, and start the drill with one player as the batter and the other four in a line about 40 feet away, standing about 15 to 20 feet apart. One at a time, in order, the fielders pitch a ball to the hitter, who takes a swing and attempts to hit a ground ball back to the fielders. If a fielder stops a ground ball or the batter hits a fly ball or line drive or misses the ball, the batter gets one out. If the fielders miss a ground ball, the next player in line pitches another ball to the hitter. The hitter gets three outs, and then she goes to the end of the line, and the first player in line becomes the hitter. Play until each fielder gets to hit at least once.

Young Girls Softball Drills – Bingo

Purpose: To develop a level swing and proper mechanics by offering instant feedback. This drill is meant to work on softball hitting techniques.

Procedure: Position two Ts at the same height with one directly behind the other. The batter drives the back ball into the front ball. The farther apart the Ts, the more difficult it is to hit the front ball because errors are magnified. The path of the hit provides instant feedback on the mechanics of the swing. If the hitter misses to the left, she has an outside-inside swing. If the hitter misses by going above, she is dropping her back shoulder. When successful the hitter should yell "Bingo."

Free Fastpitch Softball Drills – Controlled Gilmore

Working off a tee the hitter stands with her chest facing towards the pitchers mound.  She then proceeds to step in with her back foot and ‘load’ the back leg (knee bent, holding position for a couple seconds).  Once balance has been achieved on the back leg the hitter may stride forward and hit the ball.  The idea here is to increase the load on the back leg to assist in feeling the back side drive forward.
