Youth Softball Practice Drills – Pillow Slid

Purpose: This drill for softball sliding is used when base runners don't slide properly and therefore increase their chances of being tagged out and risk unnecessary injury. The pillow-slide drills helps teach youngsters the proper form for going into a basic slide.

Procedure: Each child has to bring an old pillow to practice. At practice, the kids line up 5 feet between each of them. They should place their pillows directly behind them. On the coach's command, the players drop down into the sliding position, with their right leg extended toward the base and their left leg bent under their right knee. Their chin is tucked to their chest and their hands are raised partway above their head. The pillows cushion their landings so that their bottoms and legs don't get sore.
