Softball Hitting Drills - Throw the Bat for More Power

There are certain types of softball hitting drills that I love.  I love softball hitting drills that are simple to execute, don't require complicated equipment, can be turned into a competition between athletes, will reinforce and reward use of proper mechanics, and will give  the athletes instant feedback as to whether they are doing it right or not allowing me to step away and knowing they can ''self-correct" themselves.

The softball hitting drill in this video is one of those drills.  That's why it is one of my favorites!

ProGlider Softball Hitting Drills Throw the Bat for More Power*Note: Since I created this video, there is now an even better, just as fun and just as effective way to practice drill!

Thanks to ProGlider, you no longer need as big a space. You no longer need to find something to act as a "bat" to throw. It's safer. It's easier to set up and practice and it's still super fun. => => => => => => => =>

Nice drill. I saw this in a golf book (extraordinary golf) A dozen years ago and everyone I know who tried it threw the club left. It really wakes you up.
  • Marc,
Awesome drill! I've been using a "floppy" frisbie along with the idea of throwing a pizza to the pitcher to teach the same concept to my Girls (13u) - now they'll graduate up to doing it with a bat.

    Hi Marc,
We use our old bats at Baylor. I cut the ends off of them so not to bruise or hurt their hands. Its important to finish swing after contact and extension. Proper weight shift will only occur if they finish the swing. I like them to do a verbal 2 second count upon finish to feel that finished and complete swing. I like this drill for the outside pitch as well since so many players are pull hitters. Thanks for all your good stuff!

Every coach out there has their own way of training athletes to hit softballs. In my 30 years i have seen a remarkable number of hitting options. If you have a hitting instructor who has gotten you DD to hit the ball and with some authority, stick with that coach. The girls get very confused moving on from one coach to another.

love this drill - been using it for a few years now to train girls to extend properly.
