Hitting Drills to Increase Bat Speed

Drill #1:  Training with a Hitting Tube


As noted before, the training drills that will increase the strength of a player will ultimately increase the bat speed as a consequence. This drill aims to strengthen the forearms and the elbow of a player.


  • Suspend a hitting tube vertically in position letting the tip of the tube be close to the approximate height of the height of striking.
  • Keep striking the tube slowly gently and gradually increase the magnitude of the hits and the speed.
  • Keep increasing until the tube gets to an uncontrollable speed; which will happen when the tube hits you.
  • Keep doing it for at least 10 minutes.


  • If you are playing with your friends, keep adjusting the height of the tube relative to the height of the player.
  • Never use a hitting tube that is too heavy to break a bat or hurt you in the case of swinging.
  • Never use a hitting pad with a rough surface as it is likely to damage your bat.


Drill #2: The Heavier Ball on Tee


Just like Drill #1 above, this drill too aims to develop stronger elbow and arm muscles of a player. But besides the two, this drill will also seek to train accuracy when hitting. As a coach, you can as well use this drill to train beginners on the softball hitting essentials.


This drill requires to be practiced in a batting cage or a well aerated enclosed place. It can be practiced best when training with a coach; then again, you can try it out with a friend but ensure you are never doing it alone. Now proceed as follows:

  • Place a heavy ball of about 12 inches (preferably 16 inches) or more on the batting tee at a distance of about 15 – 20 meters from the one of the walls of the cage (call the wall a “target wall”).
  • Let one of you play the coach and ensure you got the correct way of holding the bat then point you at aimed point to strike on the target wall by your hit.
  • Now, make a swing and strive to hit your target.
  • Repeats the same at least 10 times while exchanging the roles.


  • If training a total beginner, you can avoid setting the aimed point on the target wall and focus on teaching the fundamentals of holding the bat, swinging and many others. You can as well use a smaller ball for the same case.
  • For average and expert players, aim on training accuracy and speed of swings by making them have faster swings and changing the targets in every swing.


Drill #3 Throwing Old Bats


The aim of this drill is mainly to ensure that the hitters retain their balance on swings and are able to keep the barrel of the bat at an appropriate level when hitting.


Unlike the other drills, this particular drill will highly require a regulation of a coach/trainer. This drill should best be done in an open field without grass. It is not because grass will hinder training, but doing this drill on a field with beautiful grass may get you in trouble with the grounds people because bats have a tendency of digging shallow ditches on the ground. The drill requires between 10 and 15 old bats. Then proceed as follows:

  • Stand at home of a few strides from home.
  • Take the bats one after another and throw them as far as you can into the middle of the field while targeting the pitcher’s mound.
  • Repeat the exercise for at least ten bats.


  • The coach will play the role of an observer and ensure the players release the bats when facing the pitcher’s mound. Any shift to the left is an indication of poor hitting.
  • Also, the coach will observe the balance of the player that the player (you) will not lose her balance when making swings.
